Tinnitus is not a disease or an illness, it is a symptom generated within a person’s own auditory pathways. Although it is often assumed that tinnitus occurs as a result of disease of the ears, this is often not the cause. Tinnitus is a medical condition which is characterized by buzzing, clicking, ringing, whistling, or whining noises in the ears or head, despite the lack of external stimuli.

Tinnitus can occur at any age, and it is a common problem seen in older people. About one in eight people (10 - 15 percent) over 65 years of age has tinnitus. Most people have an occasional episode of tinnitus after going to a load concert or disco. Tinnitus is often more noticeable when you go to bed at night because your surroundings are quieter. Any noise in the room, like a humidifier, white noise machine, or dishwasher, can help mask tinnitus and make it less irritating.

Previous work has shown that tinnitus has a neurophysiological basis, but precisely which parts of the brain and the auditory circuits are involved is not yet understood. Tinnitus or ringing in the ears can occur from a variety of causes. Your doctor should investigate the underlying cause regardless the condition is acute or chronic.

Tinnitus may occur at the same time as or after exposure to the loud sound. Tinnitus is a big part of the music world. Performers, audio engineers and listeners of all types of music are at risk for noise-induced tinnitus and other hearing damage. In addition to being irritating, it can also be a symptom of other health problems, such as tumors, infections, or hearing loss. Occasionally, it is a sign of high blood pressure, an allergy, or anemia.
